To determine the right consumption method, strain, or potency for you, it helps to understand how cannabis works. First, you need to learn about the endocannabinoid system. The ECS (endocannabinoid system) is a signaling system located throughout the brain and body. Its purpose is to achieve and maintain homeostasis. The ECS initiates processes that work to regulate mood, sleep, stress, memory, immune system, neurological system, reproductive system, and more.
The ECS is made up of three primary components:
Endocannabinoids or molecules that are very similar to cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, are found in the cannabis plant.
Enzymes that control the rate of chemical reactions happening in the body
Receptors present throughout the body, including immune cells, fat tissue, bone, skin, pancreas, liver, heart, skeletal muscle, kidney, blood vessels, and gastrointestinal tract
The two most abundant and recognized cannabinoids are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), but there are over a hundred others. They each interact with the body’s ECS in unique ways.
THC binds with CB1 and CB2 receptors of the ECS. It imitates the behaviors of the ECS and produces psychoactive effects.
CBD does not bind with receptors but provides the ECS access to its endocannabinoids, promoting more effective functions. It does not cause psychoactive effects.
Curious About Cannabis?
While you will notice that cannabis products are categorized as sativa, indica, and hybrid, these classifications are more about the origin and appearance of the plant rather than the effects. The general rule is that indicas are more calming and relaxing to create create a body high. Sativas are expected to be more invigorating, uplifting, and associated with a cerebral high. Hybrids are a combination that can be sativa- or indica-dominant.
